Otoplasty – Ear Surgery
Otoplasty (commonly known as ear surgery) offers a highly effective solution to reshape, reposition, or reduce the size of the ears for a more balanced and natural appearance. Prominent or misshapen ears can be a source of self-consciousness for both children and adults. Whether due to genetics, injury, or developmental issues, ears that appear out of proportion with the rest of the face can affect a person’s confidence and emotional well-being. Ear surgery can address an array of common conditions with successful results.
Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Nneamaka Nwubah (or Dr. Amaka as our patients call her) can meet with you—or you and your child—for a consultation to evaluate your concerns, discuss your options, and develop a personalized treatment plan.

What Are the Benefits of Otoplasty?
Otoplasty can offer both aesthetic and psychological benefits, especially for patients who have long felt self-conscious or teased about their ears. Key benefits offered by this procedure include:
- Creates a More Balanced Facial Profile
By setting the ears closer to the head or correcting asymmetry, otoplasty helps enhance facial harmony. - Improves Self-Esteem
Many patients report feeling more confident and comfortable in social situations after surgery. - Permanent Results
Once healed, the improvements from otoplasty are long-lasting and typically do not require additional procedures. - Minimal Visible Scarring
Incisions are often hidden behind the ears, allowing for discreet, natural-looking results. - Can Be Performed on Children and Adults
Suitable for patients as young as five or six years old, when ear development is nearly complete.
What Is Involved in the Otoplasty Procedure?
Otoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s age and preferences. During the procedure, Dr. Amaka will make small incisions behind the ears to access and reshape the cartilage. She may remove, fold, or reposition the cartilage to achieve the desired contour and symmetry. Sutures are used to secure the new shape and position, and the ears are bandaged for support during the initial healing phase. The procedure generally takes about one to two hours.
What Is Recovery After Otoplasty Like?
Most patients experience a relatively quick and smooth recovery following otoplasty. Some swelling, soreness, and mild discomfort are normal in the first few days and can be managed with medication. A protective headband may be worn at night for the first couple of weeks to maintain ear positioning and protect the results. Patients are typically able to return to school, work, or normal activities within five to seven days, although strenuous exercise should be avoided for a few weeks. Dr. Amaka will provide detailed aftercare instructions and monitor your healing during follow-up appointments.
How Much Does Otoplasty Cost?
The cost of otoplasty can vary based on the complexity of the procedure, the surgical technique used, anesthesia fees, and whether one or both ears are being treated. At Amaka Aesthetics, all of our treatments are uniquely customized for each patient, which typically makes the total price different for everyone. Once the price quote has been determined after the treatment plan is developed during the initial consultation, a member of our team will be happy to discuss your options with you. In addition to numerous convenient payment methods, our practice accepts third-party financing arrangements available for qualified applicants through a variety of reputable healthcare finance agencies. These options can help make surgery more accessible based on our patients’ budgetary requirements.
